Scenes from Bound

So, in my next post I’m going to talk about the relationship that Violet and Corky have, and its premise on an exclusion of bisexuality. To do so, I’m going to need to talk about four scenes, the relevant dialogue being offered in typed form in this post.

Violet and Corky after Violet has sex with Shelly

Shelly: Hey Violet. You look great.

[Violet makes sex/pleasure noises]

Violet: I had this image of you inside of me. Like a part of me. You are so beautiful.

[Corky zips up her trousers]

Shelly: What’s wrong?

Corky: Nothing

Shelly: Yes there is. You didn’t want to see me did you?

Corky: If there’s one thing I can’t stand about sleeping with women it’s all the fucking mind reading.

Violet: I don’t understand.

Corky: I know… Violet. That’s because you can’t understand. We’re different.

Violet: We’re not all that different, Corky.

Corky: Ahhh… Let’s see. This is the part where you tell me what matters is on the inside and that inside of you is a little dyke just like me.

Violet: No she’s nothing like you. She’s a whole lot smarter than you are.

Corky: Is that what her daddy tells her?

Violet: I know what I am. I don’t have to have it tattooed on my shoulder.

Corky: So what are you saying, you don’t have sex with men?

Violet: I don’t.

Corky: Oh for Christ’s sake violet! I heard you. Thin walls remember.

Violet: What you heard wasn’t sex.

Corky: What the fuck was it?

Violet: Work. [pause] You made certain choices in your life that you paid for. You said you made them because you were good at something and it was easy. You think you’re the only person that’s good at something? We make our own choices. We pay our own prices. I think we’re more alike than you care to admit.

Corky: What about that guy this morning?

Violet: What Shelly?

Corky: Don’t tell me: you’re a workaholic.

Violet: No, Shelly knows what I am. He saw me in a bar with another woman.

Corky: Yeah, I suppose he just wants to watch.

Violet: Fuck it. I think you better leave.

Corky: Yeah I think I better.

Violet: Try not to steal anything on the way out.

Scene in bar between Corky and Violet after Shelly gets killed

Violet: He came to see me yesterday because he was afraid Caesar found out. He wanted to run, but he wanted me to come with him.

Corky: Even though he knew about you?

Violet: Yeah.

Violet: I’m making the same mistakes Shelly made. Now, I know what I want. [pause] I want out. I want a new life. I see what I’ve been waiting for, but I can’t do it alone. [Violet reaches across the table and clasps Corky’s hand] I need your help Corky.

Switches to truck scene

Violet: Caesar’s going to get the money. He’s gonna bring it–

Corky: How much money?

Violet: Shelly said it’s over two million dollars. [Corky turns and looks at Violet] Yeah. [Violet says this while shaking her head up and down] So, Caesar’s going to get it, he’s going to bring it by the apartment, he’s going to count it, he’s going to go through the books and try to figure out how Shelly did it.

Corky: Wait a minute, Violet. Do you know what you are saying? You’re asking me to help you fuck over the mob. [Violet gives a brief nod] Violet, these people are serious. You want to know how serious, you ask your friend Shelly. These people are worse than any cop because they have lots of money and no rules. You fuck them, you better do it right.

Violet: That’s why I need your help. You said you were good.
Corky: I am good. Alright, let’s just say for a moment I believe everything you’re saying.

Violet: You think I’m lying?

Corky: I didn’t say that, but since you did let’s say that you are. It would have been easy for you to set up Shelly. You could have had him killed knowing that Caesar would bring the money back to the apartment. All you would need to keep yourself clean would be someone unconnected. Someone like me.

Violet: Is that what you think?

Corky: I’m just making a point. Ughh… You have no idea what you’re asking. How much trust it takes for two people to do something like this. To me stealing’s always been a lot like sex. Two people who want the same thing. They get in a room, they talk about it. They start to plan: it’s kind of like flirting, it’s kind of like foreplay because the more they talk about it the wetter they get. The only difference is I can fuck someone I’ve just met. But to steal… I need to know someone like I know myself.

Violet [leaning towards Corky]: You think you know me like that?

Corky: I want to see the money.

Final scene in truck between Corky and Violet

[Violet has on glasses which she didn’t outside of truck]

Corky: You know what the difference is between you and me, Violet?

Violet: No.

Corky: Me neither.

[Corky puts on glasses; they clasp hands and start kissing; truck speeds off]
